29 May 2013 The Magdalene Laundries grew out of the Magdalene Asylums, the first of which was set up in 1765 as a short-term reformatory for “fallen”
Magdalene asylums, also known as Magdalene laundries, were initially Protestant but later mostly Roman Catholic institutions that operated from the 18th to the late 20th centuries, ostensibly to house " fallen women ". The Magdalene Laundries were run by an order of nuns called Sisters of the Good Shepherd. Started in Europe in the mid-1800’s these facilities, called Homes of the Good Shepherd, or asylums, were intended to care for ‘fallen women’ and provide them ways to pay penance for their sins through hard work. The laundries got their name from Mary Magdalene, the fallen woman who became one of Jesus' closest followers. They began 150 years ago as homes to rehabilitate prostitutes.
2013-02-06 Over the years, however, the Magdalene laundries—named for the Biblical figure Mary Magdalene—became primarily Catholic institutions, and the stints grew longer and longer. 2019-08-21 In the case of the Magdalene Laundries, of course, it makes no sense to invoke Vatican II (the Council was convened between 1962 and 1965). What brings critics on the left and right together is an abiding tendency to believe the worst about the Church. Why? Because in doing so it validates their position.

They were the inmates of Ireland’s notorious 20th century workhouses, the Magdalene Laundries. And this week, with the publication of a government report into the dark history of the laundries, the women came that much closer to obtaining justice.
Along with the endemic abuse of children in Catholic-run industrial schools, news of the abuse that occurred within the Magdalene laundries has shaken national trust in the Irish Catholic church. When Peter Mullan's The Magdalene Sisters came out in 2002, it exposed the public to a diabolical truth the Roman Catholic Church had long tried to keep under wraps: the rotten reality of Irish "Magdalene" laundries. Though advertised as charitable safehouses where "fallen women" could find guidance and good cheer (along with employment as laundresses), these institutions were actually rife
After 1922, the Magdalene Laundries were operated by four religious orders (The Sisters of Mercy, The Sisters of Our Lady of Charity, the Sisters of Charity, and the Good Shepherd Sisters) in ten different locations around Ireland (click here for a map).
